Units of government at the parish level are to provide regulation, a healthy and safe environment, public education, access to legal process, maintenance of public records, and other areas affecting the daily lives for the parish residents.  Units of government collect taxes and user fees to pay the cost.

While Lafayette Consolidated Government is the primary parish legislative government body, it provides only some of these  services. Elected officials, such as the School Board and Sheriff, and boards and commissions provide the balance.
